Event Terms and Conditions

In organising the Utterly Buttermere swim event we need to ensure it runs smoothly & safely so that everyone involved, participants, supporters, volunteers, marshals and safety personnel enjoy the day and come back again. We are also keen to ensure our hosts, the National Trust and landowners would like us back again. Please bear this in mind in-conjunction with our terms and conditions.

By entering you are agreeing to the following term and conditions, please also see swim requirements on the event payment page which form part of the terms.

‘I’ refers to you the entrant. 'Event' refers to the Utterly Buttermere Swim.

Entry and Requirements

Very tired or cold swimmers will be evacuated from the water and retired from the sportive. For safety reasons this is non-negotiable. 

You must be medically fit and healthy and the organisers advise that all participants consult their GP before entering or participating any of our events.

I am aware of the physically strenuous nature of this event, and the associated risks both medically and physically.

I confirm I am healthy and medically and physically fit enough to complete this event. I accept that should any medical or physical condition arise prior to the event which is likely to effect my ability to compete this will be a reason to withdraw.

Swimming wetsuits are compulsory for all swimmers*. ( *unless previously arranged, see FAQ). Wetsuits provide buoyancy and warmth. You must wear a full length swimming wetsuit for the event. No shorties or surfing type wetsuits please.

I am not permitted to use any other swimming equipment or clothing without the express permission of the organisers.

I am aware that the minimum age is set by the age I am on the day I participate in the event. I may be requested to provide ID to the organisers and failure to do so will result in an inability to compete in the event.

I understand that the organiser may introduce cut off times, these being limits on the time taken to complete sections of the event to ensure safe event operation. Competitors may be instructed to withdraw from the race in accordance with imposed cut off times. The organiser’s decision on this is final.

Entering, Registration and Payment

By entering my application online and paying a fee for entry into this event I understand and agree to abide by the terms and conditions, the instructions given by the organiser and race officials.

I shall not be eligible or entitled to participate in the event until full payment of the entry fee has been received and cleared by the event organiser. 

All Fees are inclusive of VAT at the rate of 20% VAT 

Entrants will need to register on the day on the day of the event, I am aware registration will close 20mins before the start of the first swim.

Entries from assisted swimmers are welcome, however all such participants must be accompanied by another paying entrant and should contact the organisers before entering by email so that we may advise you on your participation.

Refunds, Withdrawal and Cancellation.

There are no refunds. Entries & registrations are non-transferable and non-refundable.  

Event Organisation and Administration

The organisers cannot be responsible if the event information does not reach the intended email address or recipient. Please ensure you check your spam filters and enter the correct email address.

Information is posted on the event page on the website. 

Communications may also be via email, text or notices at the registration tent.

The organisers are entitled to impose event rules upon the participant from time to time which will form part of these Conditions.

I understand and accept that the organisers and / or media professionals may take photographs and video footage of the event and its participants for promotional use and to publicise the events and sponsors.

The organisers reserve the right to change the style, size and type of mementos offered to participants.

The organisers will use best endeavours to provide an event finish time for each participant however it cannot be held responsible for any error or technical malfunction however raised.

I am aware the organisers reserve the right to change or make amendment to the event or course distance that may be necessary for safe event operation.

The organisers have the final decision regarding any person’s participation in or removal from the event. 

I agree that no swapping, selling or transferring my place in the event is allowed. 

Race entries are NOT transferable to any other person or any other event.

I acknowledge the event organisers take every care with the provision of the event and that personal accident and personal items insurance is my sole responsibility 

I agree that my personal information can be stored, used by the organisers and our event partners in connection with the organisation and administration of the event.

I agree that my name and contact details can be used by the organisers for the promotion and marketing of the event and similar future events and services.  

The organisers shall not pass any details to 3rd parties. 

The organisers reserve the right to alter the date and start time of the event. In the event of a change of date or start time the participants will be notified of the change with as much notice as reasonably possible. No refund in full or in part shall be made for any change in date or start time for an event.

I agree the organiser reserves the right to amend the event format, reschedule the event or cancel the event due to circumstances beyond reasonable control or for any safety related reason. I am aware that the organiser may reschedule or cancel the event if circumstances beyond their reasonable control arise, including, without limitation, inclement weather conditions, water quality or water temperature, war, civil or political unrest or terrorism. 


Entrants who do not register on the day of the event are considered to have withdrawn themselves and will not be participating in the event.

I agree that once registered on the day of the event it is my sole responsibility to inform the organisers of my withdrawal from the event.

Withdrawals or retirement from the event must hand in their number and show their number / numbered hat to the event organiser at the registration tent / finish area. 

Decisions & Rulings

All decisions and rulings by the organisers their agents are considered final. Including, but not limited to all decisions relating to the safety, running and organisation of the event, the rules of the event, the timings/finish times and placing. 


I understand that by participating in the Utterly Buttermere Swim, I will be exposed to a heightened risk of injury and other harm associated with open water swimming in cold water (as low as 10oC).  These risks include: Injury when entering or leaving the water; injury from collision with other swimmers or hidden objects in the water; injury from wildlife within or around the water; illness or other injury from contaminated water; hypothermia; drowning.

I am a strong swimmer and believe myself to be capable of participating in the event without assistance.

I have no known medical conditions preventing me from participation into this event and the race organiser recommends that every participant takes a medical examination from their GP.

I have read and understand the terms and conditions of the Utterly Buttermere Swim Event and agree to the conditions of entry
