Buttermere Village.

Buttermere is a small village situated between the lakes Buttermere and Crummock Water in the north west of the Lake District National Park.

Buttermere lake is owned by The National Trust, and is 1½ miles long, ¾ mile wide and 75 feet deep.

The village of Buttermere stands at the north western end of the lake. There is a path around the lake which is about 4.5 miles (7.2 km) long, and at one point the path runs through a rock tunnel beneath the area of Hasness.

 

The name Buttermere is thought to originate from its old English meaning "the lake by the dairy pastures".

There are two small hotels in Buttermere Village, as well as a number of houses, a couple of cafes, a Youth Hostel, some holiday cottage accommodation, the farms and a village hall.

 

Buttermere valley is a popular area for walkers and climbers, the mountains and scenery are world-class. Walks include High Stile, High Craggs and Haystacks, as well as circular walks around Buttermere and Crummock Water.

A short walk from Buttermere is the highest waterfall in the Lake District. Scale Force has a single drop of 170 ft.

Car parking: Buttermere LDNP car park is in the centre of the village, behind the Bridge Hotel and beside the Fish Hotel. A small stream runs alongside the car park. Pay by phone reference: 7265. However please be aware there is poor mobile signal in this area.

The National Trust car park is on the northern entrance to the village on the road to Cockermouth.

There is no coach parking.

Sustainable Travel to Buttermere:

Access is by road, from Cockermouth in the north west; from Borrowdale via the Honister Pass; or from Braithwaite and the Newlands Valley via Newlands Hause. Honister pass and Newlands valley road are narrow and steep in places.
